How to Care for a Red Prayer Plant

This brightly patterned plant’s complete Latin name is Maranta leuconeura erythroneura. Otherwise known as the Herringbone Plant, its leaves are striped with bands of bright pink.
Like most of the plants within the Marantaceae family, the Red Prayer Plant has a unique habit of folding its leaves upwards at night. The plant has a trailing habit, and will eventually cascade over the sides of its pot and could reach about 12-18″ long! If it receives the proper amount of light, water, and care, when it matures, tiny lavender flowers will grow!
According to Wikipedia; the Marantaceae are a family, the arrowroot family, of flowering plants consisting of 31 genera and around 530 species, defining it as one of the most species-rich families in its order. Species of this family are found in the lowland tropical forests of Africa, Asia, and the Americas.

Red Prayer Plant Care Tips:

  • Light: Medium to Bright Indirect Light
  • Water: Water when the top 1-2″ of soil feels dry to the touch
  • Other Tips: You can mist your Prayer Plants periodically or set it on a pebble tray to create a humid environment. These plants are pet friendly, but obviously, you should not encourage your pets to eat your houseplants.

The Red Prayer Plant is one of my favorites – it is so unique. I have it listed in my Plant Shop because if you love houseplants, I highly recommend one of these beauties.
