Quarantine has provided so many people with the opportunity, and more importantly the time, to try new hobbies and activities. Some took up bread baking, arts and crafts, while others tried to take up gardening.
One of the saving graces of this quarantine period is that it fell during peak growing seasons for the best fruits and veggies— specifically tomatoes. This fruit is an excellent choice for the novice gardener as it is able to provide a great bounty, and I have 5 tomato gardening hacks that will help make your new hobby the most successful yet!
I don’t like to toot my own horn too often, but beep beep! I’ve gotten good at growing tomatoes! I can’t wait to share these 5 tomato gardening hacks to help you grow the best tomatoes ever! Start scrolling for my tips for your best tomatoes yet!!
TIP #1: SUPPORT YOUR TOMATOES
When I say support, I’m not talking about sitting and complimenting your tomatoes or supporting them emotionally after a hard day (although it never hurts LOL). In order to have incredible produce, find the biggest wiring or post support for the tomatoes to lean on when the going gets tough. This way, when your plant becomes as tall as you are and over-encumbered with fruits, it won’t tip over and break. This is also good for those in windier areas so that way your plant has the physical support to stand up for itself.
TIP #2: PLENTY OF SUNSHINE
Tomatoes, like people, also benefit from plenty of sunshine. The best way to ensure this is to have your plants towards the south as that provides a great deal of sunlight. However, in most regions, you can have your garden facing east or west as long as the shade is minimal. This information is very easy to look up depending on where you live, which we recommend in order to give your plants the best possible environment for development.
We have our planters on our front porch which faces East. They get plenty of sunlight and are easy for me to step out each day to water them and check for new growth.
TIP #3: QUALITY SOIL
The best environment to grow tomatoes is a soil mix that is high in nitrogen. This tomato gardening hack will ensure your tomatoes grow as well as they possibly can.
I also “treat” my tomato plants to left-over drip coffee! Diluted coffee is a strong source of nitrogen, which helps plants develop a healthy root system and aids in the production of chlorophyll. You can also use coffee grounds, which are very high in nitrogen and are a natural fertilizer and pest deterrent! You can simply water your plants with room temperature diluted drip coffee or you can scatter your used coffee grounds in the soil around the base of your tomato plant.
TIP #4: PLENTY OF WATER
This tomato hack, while on the more obvious side, is important to remember. When it comes to watering schedules, it is dependent on how dry the area your garden is located as that can impact how often you water your garden. Keep in mind what the weather of your region is like in order to make sure your plants are watered just right, never too much to cause rot or too little that the plants are dehydrated.
TIP #5: KEEPING TOMATOES HEALTHY
Tomatoes are a great fruit for the novice gardener, but it is important to remember that this plant is susceptible to pests and diseases that can ultimately impact the virility of the fruits. Bugs like butterflies lay their eggs which eventually lead to caterpillars eating away at them, and diseases such as bacterial wilt caused by infections caused by bacteria entering through wounds received from things as simple as transportation.
By following these 5 tomato growing hacks you too can have a beautiful flourishing garden full of the most delicious tomatoes! Even better because anyone can do these.
