I was a vegetarian for ~5 years, but it turns out I like sushi + the occasional cheeseburger too much to keep up the only plant-based lifestyle. But, what I learned during those several years, and still appreciate today, Milwaukee has some fantastic places to eat vegetarian food.
Whether you are a vegan, a vegetarian, a pescatarian, or just trying Meatless Mondays, there are plenty of reasons to try these Milwaukee Restaurants with plenty of vegetarian options.
Here are a handful of our favorite vegetarian restaurants in Milwaukee:
Celesta: 1978 N Farwell Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53202
You will find an internationally inspired menu that is plant-based featuring varied kinds of dishes from small plates that are shareable plates to delectable entrees. It’s also worthwhile to note that, in addition to being vegan, a good portion of the offerings at Celesta are gluten-free.
Cafe Corazon: 2394 S Kinnickinnic Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53207
We go here often for two reasons, 1) it is close to home 2) it is even closer to our gym, and who doesn’t deserve a burrito and margarita after a tough workout?!?! #balance psst: they have the best Happy Hour
We go here so often they know my order & my allergies. Which is fantastic because I can’t be trusted to speak in full sentences when I am hangry!
My go-to is the carnitas burrito no rice, extra beans & avocado, but Caleb likes to order the Soy Chorizo Torta. He got a few of our non-vegetarian friends ordering it too! Yep, it’s that good! Order it on a taco, in a burrito, or in your torta; you won’t regret it!
I love that they support local farmers & producers; Richway Acres, Redeker Farms, Borzynski Farms, Hometown Sausage, River Valley, Sassy Cow, Victory Garden Initiative, Corazon Gardens, Little Man Syrup, Simple Soyman, Yuppie Hill Poultry, DJ’s Fresh Produce, Johnsen, Vern’s, La Flor de Trigo, Freis von Kiel, and Porchlight.
On The Bus: 400 N Water St, Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53202
On the Bus is a purely plant-based restaurant located inside the Milwaukee Public Market. Serving smoothies, deli sandwiches, açaà bowls, and various topped toast options! There is something for everyone here – – even our meat-eater friends will not be disappointed!
Urban Beets Cafe & Juicery: 1401 N. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Milwaukee, WI 53212
Urban Beets serves delicious vegan sandwiches, delectable wraps, fresh salads, warm soups, and sweet desserts along with fresh juices and smoothies. They change their menu often, so be sure to stop by frequently. BONUS! They are neighbors with one of my favorite coffee shops, Pilcrow Coffee!
Blue Bat Kitchen & Tequilaria: 249 N Water St. Milwaukee, WI 53202
Blue Bat has a variety of snacks, tacos, and bowls ideal for any dietary restrictions. They have a ton of vegetarian menu options – my three favorites – blistered edamame, barbacoa taco, and the curry cauliflower taco (it’s great as a bowl, too!). They are Milwaukee’s first Tequilaria, so you can guarantee they make a great margarita and have some of the rarest bottles behind the bar!
Black Sheep: 216 SOUTH SECOND STREET
Black Sheep is known for its beautiful atmosphere and its incredible craft cocktails. As for vegetarian noms, their truffle fries are unbelievable: Hand-Cut Fries, Parmesan Reggiano, White Truffle Oil, Rosemary, Aioli… are you drooling yet?
If you want to venture a little bit out of MKE, try . . .
Cafe Manna: 3815 N Brookfield Rd, Brookfield, WI 53045
Stylish and trendy Cafe Manna serves a 100% vegetarian menu, with unique vegan and raw entrées, salads, veggie sandwiches, and fruit desserts. From Monday to Saturday, lunch and dinner include everything from burrito bowls to lentil burgers. Café Manna is one of the first 100% vegetarian restaurants in Southeastern Wisconsin. And, they are the first Certified Green Restaurant in Wisconsin.
So there you go! I know Milwaukee has the reputation of being a meat-and-potatoes town, but as you can see, it is also an excellent place for those who follow a plant-based diet.
