I have a rug addiction. I’m not ashamed to admit it. I unapologetically have purchased 2-3 rugs for each of our rooms one the past few years. I love updating the rugs in our home frequently because they can make such a dramatic change in the appearance of a room!
A rug is a great way to add some personality and style to your living room. It can also help to define the space and make it more comfortable for your guests. But with so many options available, how do you choose the right one?
Here are a few things to keep in mind when shopping for a new rug for your living room:
- The size of the rug is important. Make sure to measure the space before you start shopping so you have an idea of what size will work best.
- Choose a design that reflects your personal style. Whether you prefer a traditional or modern look, there’s a rug out there that will fit your taste.
- Think about the materials used in the construction of the rug. Some are made with natural fibers, while others are man-made.
- The color of your rug is important too. Make sure it matches the colors in the rest of the room. Otherwise, you may feel like you need to change up your existing décor to match.
I buy rugs frequently for a few reasons:
- When we first got Vík, he chewed through 2 bedroom rugs. But, you can’t blame him, he was just a puppy.
- I didn’t realize how fragile certain materials were when there are two large furry dogs wrestling on them and I am particular about the fabrics in our home looking neat and tight. Rug frays and pulls drive me crazy.
- I didn’t realize which rugs would be extremely hard to keep fur-free. With our two furry dogs (one being a long-haired shepherd) the fur gets weaved into the fibers and is difficult to vacuum out; which is why I am a fan of low-pile rugs and rugs that are considered indoor-outdoor.
- I get bored and I like to change the look of our rooms every-so-often.

How to Properly Size a Rug
When we first bought our home I was struggling to find the right size rugs and I struggled to know the right size rugs to use depending on how we chose to organize the furniture in rooms. I referred to this article on Wayfair to help make some sizing decisions. This quick West Elm Youtube video was also really helpful.
